Convergence Partners Leads Series C Funding in Yellow

Emerging markets private equity firm Convergence Partners has led a Series C investment in Yellow, accelerating the rollout of AI credit scoring and hardware asset financing.

Unbanked consumers across Sub-Saharan Africa frequently lack formal credit histories, preventing them from purchasing essential income-generating assets like smartphones and off-grid solar kits. African fintech Yellow has secured an undisclosed Series C funding round led by Convergence Partners to address this challenge. The investment will support Yellow’s goal of expanding its asset-financing footprint across Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Rwanda, DRC, Madagascar, and Nigeria to serve 10 million customers by 2030.

Why AI-driven asset underwriting is crucial Without physical collateral or traditional credit scores, rural consumers are excluded from formal financial systems. Yellow resolves this through a Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) model powered by proprietary AI underwriting algorithms. By assessing alternative data points and using the connected asset itself as collateral, Yellow safely extends credit for productive hardware to previously unbanked households.

How hardware-backed financing fuels rural growth Access to smartphones and solar systems directly increases household earning potential and connectivity. Having served over one million customers, Yellow’s distributed agent network and digital underwriting engine allow rural families to pay off high-value assets in small daily or weekly installments, building a credit profile in the process.

The part that is not about venture returns Asset-backed micropayments build a foundation for long-term economic mobility. Providing off-grid solar power and digital connectivity turns consumer hardware into instruments of income generation, enabling rural entrepreneurs to run micro-enterprises and participate in the broader digital economy.

Industry Takeaway: Combining proprietary AI credit scoring with hardware-as-collateral unlocks sustainable credit access for unbanked consumer segments.
